Fibroids can be very debilitating for many women. You don’t have to suffer in silence. In Fibroid Awareness Month, find out how Acupuncture and Chinese Herbs could help.

Impact of Fibroids on Health

Fibroids are common, non-cancerous growths that develop in or around the womb. Nearly one-third of women in the UK suffer from them.

They can range in size – some smaller than a pea and others the size of a grapefruit. You can also have many in total of varying sizes.

These fibroids are influenced by oestrogen and progesterone hormones, which is why symptoms are often worse during your period. It also explains their tendency to reduce after the menopause.

The causes of fibroids are not really known. Hormones and genetics are believed to play a part.

They may grow rapidly during pregnancy, when hormone levels are high. They can often shrink when hormones are balanced through acupuncture. They often also stop growing once a woman reaches menopause.

Potential Symptoms

  • Chronic Pain
  • Heavy Bleeding
  • Anaemia and Fatigue

Power of Acupuncture & Chinese Herbs

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), fibroids are typically viewed as an accumulation of ‘blood stasis’ and ‘Qi stagnation’ in the uterus.

Research has shown that Acupuncture treatment alongside Chinese Herbs  can help to treat fibroids.

Certain acupuncture points are linked to the uterus, so treatment can be targeted to the affected area. By bringing balance to the body’s systems overall, acupuncture can also help to regulate the mechanisms that cause fibroids to develop.

Potential Benefits

Treatment can help to:

  • Reduce heavy menstrual bleeding, which causes anaemia
  • Reduce period pains and cramps, by stimulating your body to release endorphins
  • Alleviate abdominal bloating
  • Balance hormones to stem fibroid growth
  • Support the uterine lining and ovarian function to boost fertility
