IS A HABITWhy is the Abdomen important?

The abdomen is a part of the body that many of us pay little attention to unless we experience pain or discomfort here.  Yet the abdomen contains many of our vital organs and in women, the reproductive organs too. 80% of our immune system also resides here (in the intestines). Therefore the health of the abdomen contributes greatly to overall wellbeing.

How to support your Abdomen in the winter months …

One way to support abdominal health through the winter months, is to wear a Haramaki. A Haramaki is a modern interpretation of a traditional Japanese garment and translates as belly (hara) wrap (maki). It is not dissimilar to the 1980s classic, the boob-tube, only you wear a Haramaki around your middle!

Today, Haramaki are normally made from stretch cotton. They are designed to be worn snugly, either against the skin or over clothing, to keep the abdomen warm. Thermal imagery shows that wearing a Haramaki keeps the whole body warmer. It even improves circulation to the hands and feet.

Traditional Chinese medicine teaches that one of the possible causes of infertility is a Cold Uterus – echoed in this Chinese proverb: Nothing grows in ice and snow. Wearing a Haramaki provides warmth for the womb and ovaries throughout the menstrual cycle and is even said to improve menstrual cramps, as well as supporting digestion. Wearing a Haramaki during pregnancy, is also popular, supporting the growing bump and keeping the uterus cosy and warm for the baby.

Bonus tip –

Keeping the feet warm, is my other tip for the winter. Key acupuncture meridians that support reproductive health, begin on the feet and travel up to the hips and into the womb. Avoiding walking on cold floors with bare feet and investing in a nice pair of slippers will help keep you warm and well.

Haramaki (and slippers) are also beneficial for men too. They keep out draughts and warming the belly and kidneys.
