How can an online session help me if you can’t put in needles? Even at a distance your acupuncturist can provide an effective treatment – Julie Kelham explains how
- Feeling Overwhelmed, Anxious or Irritable?
- Problems with Sleep?
- Not coping?
Ongoing Support From Your Acupuncturist Can Help.
This is a challenging time on so many levels and talking things through with your acupuncturist where that trust and safety has been built up can be a huge support. We can continue to treat your existing or any new Chinese Medicine patterns by showing you suitable points and ways of stimulating these points in order to get a similar Qi response as needling.
Diet and Lifestyle
We can support you by carrying out a full dietary assessment providing information on foods which will support your particular health needs from a Chinese Medicine perspective.
For example, if you have a Damp condition then we can look at foods which eliminate Damp and foods to avoid which exacerbate Damp. We can look at foods that strengthen Spleen Qi, which will help your body to absorb food and nutrients more effectively. We can offer particular recipes that will work for you. Food is such an energetic and powerful form of medicine in itself.
We can explore any lifestyle factors that may be impacting on your health – such as insufficient exercise, sitting at a desk for long periods of time, having lots of Zoom meetings. We can then look at lifestyle tweaks that will improve your wellbeing.
Ways of Coping
During an online acupuncture consultation, we can advise you on coping strategies so that you can better manage during lockdown.
Many people are noticing that they are over-eating or that their alcohol use has greatly increased over the past few weeks. Some people are struggling with feeling ‘bored’, and with facing some of the uncomfortable feelings that can be underlying that ‘boredom’ This could be shock, fear, anxiety, worry, grief, anger or frustration.
Alcohol, cannabis, cigarettes, sugar and carbohydrates all have an energetic impact on the body. They can have a ‘numbing’ effect, which can be a way of us coping with all of these tiring emotions. For example, alcohol temporarily moves our Liver Qi giving us that sense of feeling relaxed and less ‘flat’ or frustrated. But over time, increased alcohol use can cause Liver Qi Stagnation leaving you feeling more flat, low and irritable. So we can then end up in a Catch 22 situation.
We can support you with managing this time and explore whether there are any changes you would like to make.
Qi Gong
We can recommend traditional Chinese Exercises for Health. We can advise you on particular simple exercises that will strengthen your individual element type and constitution. This will then benefit your overall emotional and physical health and wellbeing.
Health Review
We can use this extra time to carry out a comprehensive review of your health and related areas, such as sleep, appetite, digestion and so on.
We can look at your initial reason for coming for acupuncture, what has improved, what still needs attention, and whether your focus has changed. This valuable process will hugely enrich your future treatments, as the up-to-date information will be right at hand to further inform us when treating you.
We can recommend self-acupressure or moxibustion therapy to support your health and a strong immune system.
Childhood Health History
We can use this time to explore in more depth your childhood health and how it may affect your immune system. We can look at how particular childhood illnesses may be impacting on your adult health. and advise you on ways in which you can improve your health and wellbeing.
