Tuina Massage

Tuina Massage, pronounced ‘Twee nah’, is a fundamental branch of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Originating in ancient China more than 3,000 years ago, it is often used alongside other TCM therapies such as acupuncture, moxibustion, cupping, Qigong, and Chinese herbalism.

Tuina is sometimes referred to as an ‘acupressure massage’ as it uses manual techniques to stimulate the same meridians and acupressure points as acupuncture.

A Tuina Healthcare Maintenance Massage is a great way to relieve tension, ease pain, support mobility, boost circulation, and promote deep relaxation and overall wellbeing.

What does a Tuina Massage involve?
Tuina follows the same meridians and points that are used in acupuncture. Your Tuina Massage practitioner uses a range of manual techniques such as kneading, pressing, pushing, rolling, tapping, tapotement and traction to stimulate the meridians and acupressure points, promoting circulatory flow and Qi Energy flow throughout the body.

Tapotement in Tuina massage is a rhythmic percussion technique that uses light, rapid tapping or striking movements with the hands or fingers on the body. As well as stimulating Qi and blood circulation, it is also used to energise muscles, and awaken the nervous system.

What conditions can it help with?
Tuina can be used to treat a range of musculoskeletal problems such as back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain and knee pain.

It relieves tension in the body, boosts circulation, supports mobility and promotes deep relaxation and increased wellbeing.

Tuina can also be used as a maintenance tool, preventing problems before they arise. It does this by encouraging the movement of energy and blood flow throughout the body and by keeping muscles supple and free in their movement.

What can I expect from my session?
Your first session will include a full holistic consultation where you will be asked about your lifestyle habits and symptoms, areas of discomfort. This enables your practitioner to tailor the healthcare massage to your needs.

Dependent on your area of discomfort, you will start this and all follow-up massage routines either in a seated position or lying down on the massage couch.

There is no need to undress for this massage – it is performed through loose-fitting clothes.

Will it hurt?
Some of the Tuina techniques are more vigorous than others and can feel painful. This is totally normal, and a slight tender feeling can last for up to 24 hours.

Your practitioner will communicate with you throughout your treatment regarding the pressure level and will never go beyond what is too much for you.

How many sessions will I need?
Regular Tuina is a great way of maintaining you body’s inner balance and preventing problems before they arise. At best, Tuina is to be had once a month or more as a healthcare maintenance massage.
