Sports Massage

Sports Massage is a targeted therapy to improve performance, prevent injuries, and speed up recovery. It does this by addressing specific muscle groups, reducing tension, and breaking down adhesions.

This treatment bridges the gap between relaxation and physiotherapy. It is more intense and focused than a relaxation massage, and involves deep-tissue manipulation, stretching, and other techniques, such as myofascial release, and trigger-point therapy to break down adhesions and flush out metabolic waste. These help to alleviate post-event soreness, chronic pain, and physical imbalances caused by repetitive activity.

Whether you are an ultra-endurance athlete, a weekend trail runner, or simply seeking better mobility for daily life, Sports Massage is an effective way to recover from fatigue, prepare for your next challenge, and help you perform at your best.

How does Sports Massage work?

From a physiological perspective, Sports Massage manipulates soft tissue to improve circulation and lymphatic drainage. This mechanical action accelerates the flushing of metabolic waste products while driving oxygen-rich blood into muscle fibres to speed up repair.

Your therapist will also use targeted pressure to break down adhesions and tension that restrict mobility. This restores elasticity to your tissues and helps to ‘reset’ your nervous system.

What can Sports Massage help with?

Sports Massage is a vital tool for injury prevention and active maintenance. The treatment helps to manage the muscular tension and tightness often associated with physical activity.

It is ideal for relieving the general aches and pains caused by desk work or cycling posture, reducing Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness after training. It also keeps soft tissue supple to minimise the risk of future strains.

What can I expect from a session?

Your initial appointment includes a full consultation and postural assessment to tailor the treatment to your specific needs.

During all sessions a combination of techniques will be used to meet your needs. Your therapist will work with you to get the right pressure levels for you to ensure your treatment is effective yet manageable.

After the treatment you will be given simple aftercare advice to prolong the benefits of the massage.

Are there any misconceptions about Sports Massage?

The most common misconception is that Sports Massage is reserved for elite athletes. In reality, everyone benefits.

Muscular tension from sitting at a desk, driving, or daily life accumulates in the say way as it does for training fatigue. Sports Massage treats the ‘occupational athlete’ as much as the runner, helping to relieve posture-related pain, stiffness, and stress.

How regularly will I need treatment?

For general maintenance, a monthly visit is recommended. However, addressing specific areas of tension may require more regular sessions to see lasting results.
