Holistic Massage

The word holistic means to take into account the whole person and recognise that symptoms and psychology are often interconnected. Therefore, holistic massage is individually tailored to suit your body, symptoms and objectives. The therapists employ a range of techniques and use their sensitivity to tune in to your body.  Therefore, this treatment can be physically restorative and mentally relaxing, or revitalising depending on your aim.

Why have a holistic massage?
Massage has numerous health benefits. These include the relaxation of tight muscles, improved circulation, a strengthened nervous system, improved joint mobility, release of toxins, injury support and repair, and the easing of ailments such as back pain, arthritis and headaches.

It is also beneficial to psychological well-being. Touch is a powerful medium for ensuring we feel cared for, connected and safe.  Bodywork (massage alone, or a combination of massage and movement) can be used therapeutically to help release negative emotion or trauma (both of which can manifest as physical or mental symptoms).  Holistic massage and bodywork will help you to learn more about the dialogue of your body and gently allow you to release aspects of the past that may be holding you back or causing you pain or discomfort.

What can I expect in a session?
Your therapist will discuss why you would like a massage and what you are hoping to achieve. This will help the practitioner select the techniques they use so that you get maximum benefit. If you are having the treatment for a particular condition or symptom, the therapist may explore with you how the condition has arisen and what may, or may not, be done in daily life to lessen the effects, or to prevent recurrence. If your aim is to relax, the therapist will use this information to tailor their techniques so that you get the most restorative experience. Ordinarily during massage, you will lie on your back, tummy, or side, on a massage table.
What techniques are used?
Techniques vary depending on your individual body. These are some of the most common:

  • Deep, probing, engaged work
  • Light, rhythmic soothing touch
  • Invigorating movement and stretches
  • Gentle, still, balancing holds
  • Breath work
How often do I need a massage?
This is entirely up to you. Some people choose to have one off sessions. This can be helpful during times of stress, or because you want to treat yourself. Others recognise the benefits of regular massage in terms of their physical and mental well-being and choose to commit to regular intervals.
