Pilates was developed by German-born Joseph Pilates, who believed mental and physical health were closely connected. His method was influenced by western forms of exercise, including gymnastics, boxing and Greco-Roman wrestling. Pilates immigrated to the US in the 1920s and opened a studio in New York, where he taught his method, which he called “contrology” – for several decades.
Pilates aims to strengthen the body in an even way, with particular emphasis on core strength to improve general fitness and wellbeing. Liz may use pilates-style exercises in physiotherapy sesssions to help you achieve your goals but also holds group pilates classes on Tuesdays at 6pm.
What conditions can this treatment help with?
People of all ages may come to a pilates session to strengthen their body, with a particular emphasis on fitness and wellbeing. It can be very beneficial to those with back pain, those who have desk-based and sedentary jobs. Our bodies are not designed for our current lifestyles and strengthening your core enables your body to handle day-to-day life with ease.
Why might I prefer a 1-2-1 session?
1-2-1 private sessions may be suitable for complete beginners or those with health conditions to ensure that they can safely attend the group classes. It allows more attention and practice of learning of the breathing techniques, movement techniques and tips, and core values of pilates.
What can I expect from my first session?
For 1-2-1 private sessions: The first session will be a little longer as we will run through medical history and cover any barriers to personal goals. We will cover what is required to access a group class and what alterations you might bring to your practice e.g. an extra supportive block to sit on for tight hips.
Each follow-up session will run through what you have learned and then progress exercises to achieve your personal goals e.g. improve balance day-to-day.
What should I wear?
Comfortable sports clothes e.g. leggings or tracksuit bottoms and a t-shirt or sports top
How much does it cost?
