Phlebotomy

Phlebotomy includes the taking of blood for medical tests. If you are looking to arrange a blood test for yourself, you can do so by buying a testing kit online, or obtain one from your healthcare provider. Then book a phlebotomy appointment here at the clinic, where our phlebotomist can do the essential blood collection needed for your tests, and ensure your blood samples are sent to the relevant specialist for testing. You can also request centrifuge – for samples requiring ‘spinning’.

Venesection is also available. Venesection is known as therapeutic phlebotomy or bloodletting, Venesection is a medical procedure where approximately 450ml of blood is removed from a person’s body to bring therapeutic benefits for specific medical conditions. These include conditions such as hemochromatosis (iron build-up), polycythaemia (elevated red blood cell concentration), or hormone therapies such as testosterone replacement therapy (TRT). The body will naturally replenish the plasma within 48 hours, with red cells replaced within four to eight weeks.

Just remember to bring your blood-draw kit with you, along with any accompanying paperwork you have been given.

    Yes – if you are aware of the specific blood tests you need or have received recommendations, we can facilitate the process. Your blood sample will be collected and sent to an accredited external laboratory for testing. You can expect to receive the results within a couple of days.

    Currently, we do not offer appointments for NHS-requested blood tests. However, we are actively working towards collaborating with the NHS to accommodate urgent requests in the future.

    Typically, undergoing a blood test should result in only a mild sensation, like a slight pinprick when the needle first touches the skin. If you have any worries or anxieties, to talk to your phlebotomist who is here to help you.

    • Hydrate: Drink plenty of water in the days leading up to the procedure.
    • Wear Comfortable Clothing: that is loose and allows easy access to the arm.
    • Eat Well: have a light meal before the procedure to avoid light-headedness.

    Your phlebotomist will explain the procedure, addressing any concerns or questions you may have. You will be seated comfortably, and the arm chosen for the procedure will be cleaned and prepared. A sterile needle will be inserted into a vein in your arm. You may feel a brief pinch or sting, then the blood will be collected for therapeutic purposes. After blood collection, a bandage will be applied to the site to prevent bleeding and bruising.

    • Rest: Take a few minutes to rest after the procedure. Sit or lie down as needed.
    • Hydrate: Drink plenty of fluids, especially water, to help replenish lost volume.
    • Avoid Strenuous Activities: Refrain from heavy lifting or strenuous activities on the day of the procedure.
    • Observation: Your phlebotomist will monitor you for any immediate adverse reactions.

    Venesection is generally safe, with serious side effects unlikely. However, as with any medical procedure, there are associated risks, including:

    • Bruising: Mild bruising at the needle insertion site is common and should subside within a few days.
    • Light-headedness: It’s normal to feel lightheaded immediately after the procedure. Rest and adequate hydration usually alleviate this sensation.

    Uncommon risks may include:

    • Infection from bacteria carried into the bloodstream by the needle.
    • Nerve damage, resulting in temporary or permanent numbness, tingling, burning, or pain.
