Solution Focused Hypnotherapy

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy (SFH) is a safe and effective therapy that has an emphasis on positive movement and change. Rather than delving in to the past, the focus is very much on the present and the future. Working in partnership with your therapist, your sessions steer away from what created the problem and instead is centred around endorsing your preferred way of living. This allows you to initiate positive expectation and access your own solutions.

This highly successful therapeutic approach has its roots in the work carried out by therapists in the mid twentieth century, in particular the American psychiatrist and hypnotherapist Milton H Erickson, famously known as the ‘father of hypnotherapy’. His life story was an inspiration in itself and testament to the power of adopting a solution focused mind.

How does Solution Focused Hypnotherapy work?

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is a combination of psychotherapy and hypnosis. It also incorporates Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP), when appropriate. Its effectiveness is largely attributed to the commitment of the therapist and client, working in partnership to bring about positive and lasting change. Engaging in solution focused questioning, goal setting and hypnosis will start to break down old associations of negative thinking, unwanted habits and behaviours and will allow the client to realign thought processes in a healthier and more positive way.

Hypnosis is a safe, natural and powerful technique that is integral in the therapeutic process as it initiates a pleasant state of relaxation both mentally and physically. This allows the subconscious mind to become responsive to suggestions and solutions that promote and reinforce positive change. During this process, you are in full control. Results are usually achieved in a relatively short period of time.

What can it help me with?

Hypnotherapy can help with many conditions, particularly where the underlying issue is stress related, which we may or may not recognise as being the overarching factor. When we feel as though we cannot cope with situations or events in our life that we could have done previously, or the small things in life are getting to us and our tolerance levels have gone right down, then our brain is telling us that it’s time to look for ways to reduce stress and relax more.

What can I expect in a sessions?

The Initial Consultation is a time for you to explain how you would like the therapy to help. The therapist will provide a comprehensive explanation of how the brain works and the benefits of hypnosis/trance during the couch session which takes place during the latter part of subsequent sessions. This is also a time when they discuss how you can work collaboratively to reach the desired outcome. This session usually lasts up to one hour and is free of charge. The therapist provides a complimentary CD/mp3 which will start the process off, with the recommendation that the you listens to this each night to start to reduce any underlying anxiety, to ensure continuity between sessions and to enhance the process. They will also discuss the anticipated amount of sessions, which will be tailored around your individual needs.

Subsequent sessions also last up to one hour and begin by using solution focused techniques, followed by hypnosis/trance. The progress made during these sessions will be determined by the level of commitment and participation of you and of course by your own natural pace.

Will I lose control under hypnosis?

Many people feel concerned that they will lose control during hypnotherapy. This is understandable due to the way that hypnosis has often been depicted. During a session of Solution Focused Hypnotherapy, you will be guided by your practitioner, into a state of deep relaxation. This is a natural state, like day-dreaming. We move in and out of this state every day. During SFH, you will always remain in control. Research studies show that your subconscious mind will reject anything it does not want to entertain. Therefore, you cannot be induced to do anything that you would not do consciously. Sometimes, it can take people a few sessions before they feel safe and relaxed enough to enter a deep state of relaxation. This is perfectly okay and usually results in a deeper and more satisfactory trance state in the end.

How many sessions will it take?

Your practitioner will be able to give you a better indication after seeing you for a consultation. However, some therapies tend to be quicker than others. Stopping smoking can often be achieved in one session and working with quite simple phobias such as flying, water and spiders normally 3 – 4 sessions. More entrenched problems such as different addictions, depression or anxiety may take longer. The Solution Focused Therapy takes on average 8 – 10 sessions. Many clients find the experience so helpful that they continue to have sessions after their original problem has subsided.
